Talkeetna: Alaska Dog Mushing, Flightseeing and Snowmobile Adventure
Mountain climbers from all over the world come to Talkeetna to challenge Mount McKinley. Most of them are flying to the Kahiltna Glacier Base Camp located at an elevation of 7200 ft. Be prepared to do this too ! Extremely popular winter activities in Alaska are snowmobile tours around Petersville - just beneath the breathtaking Alaska Mountain Range with towering Mt. McKinley (20.320 ft), Mt.Foraker (17.400 ft) and Mt. Hunter (14.573 ft) in the background. The area accumulates about 6 ft of snow every year and provides more than 300 miles of partly groomed trails. Another popular area is the incredible mountain scenery along Kesugi Ridge within Denali State Park.
Day 1: Anchorage
Upon arrival in Anchorage pick up your 4x4 rental car and drive to your hotel in downtown Anchorage. Remaining day at leisure and time to enjoy the many winter festival activities during the ongoing annual Winter Fur Rendezvous with: Native Arts Market, Theater Show, Winter Carnival Activities, Snow Sculpturing Competition, Snowshoe Softball Matches and Firework Displays. The statue of the legendary lead dog Balto, located on 4th Avenue, marks the "official" starting point of the Iditarod Race. There is also a statue of Balto in New York City's Central Park. Don't miss a early evening gourmet dinner with a breathtaking sunset view across Cook Inlet from the Simon & Seafords restaurant and sample some fresh Alaska seafood just above the shoreline of Cook Inlet. Day 2: Anchorage - Talkeetna
Stopover in Wasilla and visit the Iditarod Trail Headquarter. Continue your journey and stop over at Vern Halter's Sled Dog Kennel - a well known and successful Iditarod and Yukon Quest Musher. After a educational and inspiring Iditarod presentation, dog mushing basics and a kennel introduction tour you will get your own sled and a dog team to mush for about 8-miles on a beautiful wilderness trail. (Optional Sightseeing/Activity Tour) Arrive at your lodge in Talkeetna in the early evening hours. Overnight: Talkeetna
Day 3: Talkeetna
Get ready for a 6-hour snowmobile tour in the shadows of Mt. McKinley and don't forget your camera ! (Optional Sightseeing/Activity Tour) Ride your snowmobile through snow covered meadows, forests, along groomed trails and be impressed with the unbelievable and crystal clear views of Mt.McKinley, Mt. Foraker and Mt. Hunter. We'll stop at one of the local wilderness lodges and have lunch before we continue heading back home. This trip is for the beginners and intermediate riders and our professional guide will provide introductions on how to operate the snowmobiles safely. We use only the most popular and outstanding performance Ski-Doo Summits - or similar snowmobiles for these exploration and team building tours. Return to Talkeetna. Overnight: Talkeetna
Day 4: Talkeetna - Anchorage
Morning Flightseeing Tour from Talkeetna to the Kahiltna Glacier Mountaineering Base Camp. (Optional Sightseeing Tour) Land on the glacier, stand beneath the towering mountains, enjoy magnificent views, realize their immense scale and get a sense of a destination that draws people from all over the world. The rest of the tour takes you within 6-miles of Mt.McKinley's north/south summit (20.320 ft). You will enter an ancient world of rugged high mountain peaks and glacier filled valleys. Take in the views of Ruth Glacier, the renowned Sheldon Amphitheater, Moose Tooth and the Great Gorge with a mile high granite walls - the worlds deepest and the intense blue melt water pools that dot the glaciers. Return to Talkeetna and continue your journey back to Anchorage.
